Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
